Breast Implants

Breast implants are often used for cosmetic purposes to change the overall appearance of the breasts and give them a fuller and more balanced look. Choosing the right plastic surgeon is essential to getting the best results. Dr. Hiers has over 30 years of experience in helping women find their beautiful, and will be with you every step of the way.

The Benefits of Breast Implants?

If you’ve had changes in breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, implants can help restore the fullness you want and help achieve firmer, fuller, and more uniform breasts. For most women, this transformation boosts confidence, self-esteem, body image, and sexual satisfaction. Dr. Hiers has extensive experience with breast augmentation, and will help you choose the best implant size and shape for you.

Are you a good candidate?

General qualifications for breast implant surgery include:

  • you must be at least 18 years of age,
  • have fully developed breasts,
  • and be free of any medical issues that may interfere with elective surgery.

If you are not happy with your current size or shape, unsatisfied with previous breast implant surgery, or are experiencing issues such as symmastia, misshapen or malpositioned implants, hardness around implant (capsular contracture), schedule a consultation with Dr. Hiers to evaluate your situation. Her experience of over 30 years makes her the right choice for you.

Every patient is unique, so Dr. Hiers will discuss your personalized breast implant surgery options and provide answers to your specific questions. During the one hour consultation, she will provide information on the different types of breast implants, specifically silicone and saline, and advise on which would be most appropriate for your size and frame. You will also have the opportunity to try on different sizes of implants. These discussions with Dr. Hiers will help ensure you achieve the results you desire.

  • Types

There are two main types of implants. While both types have a silicone shell, they are filled with either silicone or saline.

    • Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water, provide a uniform shape. These implants are firmer to the touch, and can be filled to a range of sizes to accommodate women who are slightly uneven.
    • Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel and feel more natural and softer to the touch.

During your consultation, you and Dr. Hiers will work together to decide the best implant option.

  • Size

Dr. Hiers offers a wide variety of implant sizes. As part of your consultation, you will be measured to see what range of sizes best fits your frame and tissue. You will also have an opportunity to actually try on different sizes and gain true perspective on how your post-operative breasts will look in proportion to your body. Patients are often surprised to discover that a size they thought they would like is not the size they eventually choose.

  • The Procedure

Breast implant surgery typically takes one hour to complete and is performed in a surgery center for your comfort and safety. You will receive general anesthesia, meaning you will be completely asleep and feel no pain during surgery.

  • Incision Location

The most commonly used incisions for breast implants surgery are an inframammary incision, an incision made under the crease of the breast or a peri-areolar incision, an incision made around the areola. During your consultation, Dr. Hiers will explain the differences between the two incisions, discuss scarring issues, and make a recommendation based on your anatomy and implant selection.

  • Implant Location

Once the incision is made, the breast implant is placed either behind the breast tissue or beneath the pectoral and breast muscle. Incisions are closed using sutures, surgical tape, and skin adhesive.

Recovery: What to Expect

During your consultation, recovery instructions will be discussed.
  • Immediately after Surgery

    • Pain medication is prescribed for pain.
    • Patients can expect to take it easy for the first few days.
    • For the most part, you’re likely to go back to work after three or four days.
    • Results are immediately visible, and continue to improve as swelling subsides, tissues relax, and implants settle.
  • Post Surgery

    • During the first month of recovery, you will be restricted from participating in vigorous activity.
    • Most patients are usually able to resume activities, such as running and weightlifting, after six weeks.

As with most surgeries, there are risks. Trusting an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Hiers will greatly minimize those factors. During the consultation, Dr. Hiers will answer any questions or concerns you may have and address all risks.
